The World's Fastest Level of Light Speed AF

More Accurate and Faster than Phase-difference AF The World's Fastest Level of Light Speed AF

The DMC-GF3 features the world's fastest level*1 of Light Speed AF featuring approx. 0.1 second*2 which is achieved by reducing the detection time for focusing by doubling the drive speed from 60 fps to 120 fps.
Not only the accuracy but also the speed excels by far than the high-end digital SLRs with phase-difference AF with the advanced contrast AF system in the DMC-GF3.
Combined with the touch AF control, setting and focusing at the subject is incredibly easy and quick, never missing the spur-of-the-moment.

High-precision Contrast AF System

The DMC-GF3 adopts the contrast AF for its focus system. Compared with the phase-difference system AF, the contrast AF boasts higher accuracy even in shooting at small F value.
The phase-difference AF system is susceptible to mechanical margin of error. However, in the contrast AF system, focusing is controlled by the image sensor so that no mechanical margin of error occurs to achieve precise focusing.

*1 The time for focusing on the subject is measured with the LUMIX G X VARIO PZ 14-42mm / F3.5-5.6 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S. (H-PS14042) (bundled lens in the DMC-GF3X) or LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm / F4.0-5.8 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S. (H-VS014140) to move the lens position to “2m” from “infinity” position. The zoom position is in wide range. Panasonic measurement method.
*2 Approx. 0.1 sec with the LUMIX G X VARIO PZ 14-42mm / F3.5-5.6 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S. and LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm / F4.0-5.8 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S., approx. 0.18 sec with LUMIX G 14mm / F2.5 ASPH. (H-H014) and with LUMIX G VARIO 14-42mm / F3.5-5.6 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S. (H-FS014042).
• To get the best AF performance with the DMC-GF3 and the LUMIX G X VARIO PZ 14-42mm / F3.5-5.6 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S., the firmware of DMC-GF3 must be updated to ver. 1.1 or later.
• To get the best AF performance with the DMC-GF3 and LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm / F4.0-5.8 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S., the firmware of LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm / F4.0-5.8 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S. must be updated to ver. 1.3 or later.

For Maximum Freedom in Composing Images Full-area Focusing with Touch AF

The DMC-GF3 incorporates full-area focusing which makes it possible to set focus on any point in the field of view. Frame composition is free and intuitive combining the touch-screen operation.

The Contrast AF Advantage: Matches Almost Any Scene A Variety of AF Modes Featuring Pinpoint AF

Contrast AF system* gives the DMC-GF3 a variety of AF modes. There's an option that's just right for any shooting situation. With the AF mode button, you can choose the focus mode you want smoothly.

* Lenses that are not compatible with the contrast AF function can be used with manual focusing.

Pinpoint AF

The Pinpoint AF function is incorporated in the DMC-GF3 allowing more precise focus setting by further enlarging the focusing area. It assists, for example, setting focus right on the pupil in an eye.

1-area AF

The 1-area AF function lets you focus on the subject in any part of the LCD – just touch the screen to point it out. You can also freely change the size of the AF frame.

Multi-area AF

The camera divides the 23 AF areas into 9 groups. When you select one of the groups, the camera automatically selects the optimal area from that group.

AF Tracking

Touch the screen, and the DMC-GF3 locks on and automatically "tracks" the subject as it moves, keeping on adjusting the focus settings for best results.

1-area AF in Face Detection

This mode will point the auto focus to a selected location while detecting faces in the image.

Touch AF in Video Recording

The touch AF in video recording lets you enjoy professional-like rack focusing. Just by pointing the subject, the focus is shifted to it and let it stand out to attract attention.

MF Assist

You can enlarge the part by just a touch to select 1x, 4x, 5x or 10x and smoothly move the part by dragging it on the screen. The 4x enlarged view is displayed on the framing screen making it possible to set fine focus while composing the whole picture at the same time.

Quick AF

The ordinary AF is activated when the shutter button is pressed half-way, while the Quick AF starts operating as soon as the camera is pointed toward a subject*1. This dramatically reduces the shutter delay time and lets you take images quickly*2.

*1 The Quick AF does not work together with the AF Tracking.
*2 The focus speed may be slower in dark surroundings.

AF+MF Function

The AF+MF function provides more efficient, more precise focusing. After focusing with AF, simply turn the focus ring manually for even finer control.

Aperture effect preview

Shutter speed effect preview

The Full-time Live View lets you see what you're shooting with a field of view of approx. 100%. The viewing method can be selected to match your shooting conditions and composition, which makes them ideal for active shooting.
You can confirm the depth of field and shutter speed effects by pressing the Function button, if you select the Preview mode.

Adjustable LCD

Brightness, saturation and colors of the LCD can all be adjusted. This is handy because it lets you adjust them in advance, based on your computer display or other playback device.

A Versatile Consecutive Mode to Match Your Shooting Intent High-speed Consecutive Shooting

The DMC-GF3 lets you snap off unlimited consecutive shots at approx. 3.8 fps with full resolution, or 2.8 fps / 2 fps even when using the Full-time Live View. While Full-time Live View shooting, you can take shot after shot of the most decisive moments in sports and other action scenes, while precisely framing your shots in the LCD and optimizing the settings.

* Images can be taken until the capacity of the card becomes full. However the burst speed will become slower halfway. The exact timing of this depends on the aspect ratio, the picture size, the setting for the quality and the type of card used.
