High Image Quality for Both Photos and Videos

Basic Principle of LUMIX G Image Quality

High Image Quality in Both Still and Motion Images 12.1-megapixel Live MOS Sensor

While maintaining breakthroughs in advanced functions and compactness of design, the DMC-GF3 achieves the superb image quality that rivals or even surpasses digital SLR cameras.
The 4/3-type 12.1-megapixel Live MOS sensor offers the best of both worlds - the superior image quality of a CCD sensor, and the lower power consumption of a CMOS sensor. This sensor is advantageous for photo and video recording with its high S/N, thanks to an advanced circuit structure that is unaffected by the noise generated in each of the circuits.

Greater Beauty, Higher Speed, and Less Power Consumption Venus Engine

The Venus Engine for the DMC-GF3 enhances its performance with an adoption of new noise reduction technology for even higher quality of image.
This advanced noise reduction system realized S/N improvement by approx. 3dB at ISO3200 / ISO6400 setting respectively and improved the color reproduction in high sensitivity recording. The result is a picture with stunning clarity if shot in low-lit situations.
Furthermore, optimization of the parameter contributes to the increase of resolution.

Adopting Various Methods Corresponding to the Nanofabrication of the Cell

1: Advanced CNR (Chromatic Noise Reduction) at the Edges

By preventing the color mixture which tended to occur around the edges, any chromatic noise, not only in the gradation part but also in the edge part, is described clearly.

2: Noise Suppression at the Edges

The engine also provides selective noise reduction to the outline part to let it have more naturally-balanced curve without deterioration of the resolution in the detailed area such as human hair.

3: Spot-type Noise Suppression

Spot-type noise which can be often seen in the dark area of the image taken in low light situation or color bleeding on high luminance area generated by the chromatic aberration is effectively suppressed.

Video

The newly integrated motion detection circuit elevates the accuracy of motion detection to suppress the noise generated in moving parts more effectively.

Extended Battery Life

The Venus Engine also excels in energy consumption. Thanks to optimization and rationalization in electric design, it extends the battery life despite the decreased capacity and size of the battery. This makes it possible to take approx. 320 shots*1, 330 shots*2 or approx. 340 shots*3 on a single battery charge.

Rich Gradation Reproduces Images in All Their Original Beauty Intelligent D-range Control

The Intelligent D-range Control offers even more natural looking by optimizing the exposure for each part of an image, preventing blocked shadows and blown highlights and helping ensure that gradation and details are reproduced beautifully including the blue color of the sky. An automatic backlight compensation function is activated whenever the camera detects the subject in backlight.

Photos and Videos with Exquisite Detail Intelligent Resolution Technology

With the Intelligent Resolution technology, 3 areas – outlines, detailed texture areas and soft gradation areas – are automatically detected. Apart from the uniform enhancement of sharpness, the innovative technology Intelligent Resolution precisely performs signal processing pixel by pixel in the most effective way according to the area. As a result, images are naturally clear and crisp in both photo and video recording.

The DMC-GF3 also features the “EXTENDED” option for more natural looking to be printed in large size.

Still image resolution is vastly improved.

Video resolution is also significantly improved.

Breathtakingly beautiful videos, and clear images cut out from videos.

Extended, High-resolution Videos in a Small Body 1920 x 1080 Full HD Video in AVCHD Format

There are always two options to record spur-of-the-moment scenes – high-quality photos or videos. You can simply choose the one that saves precious memories most beautifully with the DMC-GF3. The DMC-GF3 can record high-resolution full HD 1,920 x 1,080 videos*1 despite its small body. The AVCHD format features almost twice the recording time in HD quality than the conventional Motion JPEG*2.

A special, dedicated button on the top lets you instantly start recording videos while shooting photos without having to make any extra settings.

*1 Full HD (1,920 × 1,080) videos are output by the image sensor at 30p (NTSC) / 25p (PAL), and recorded at 60i (NTSC) / 50i (PAL). HD (1,280 × 720) videos are output by the image sensor at 30p (NTSC) / 25p (PAL), and recorded at 60p (NTSC) / 50p (PAL). *2 QuickTime Motion JPEG. Continuous recording exceeding 2GB is not possible when recording Motion JPEG. Remaining time for continuous recording is displayed on the screen. *3 These are standard times taken at a temperature of 23°C (73.4°F) and a humidity of 50%RH. The time available for recording varies depending on the environment, the interval between recordings, and the manner of use. Actual recordable time is the time available for recording when repeating actions such as switching the power supply [ON]/[OFF], starting/stopping recording, zoom operation, etc. *4 With LUMIX G VARIO 14-42mm / F3.5-5.6 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S. • Videos can be recorded continuously for up to 29 min 59 sec in European PAL areas. • The length of recording time depends on the capacity of the SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card. • Use a card with SD Speed Class* with "Class 4" or higher when recording videos in AVCHD. Also, use a card with SD Speed Class with "Class 6" or higher when recording videos in Motion JPEG. *SD Speed Class is the speed standard regarding continuous writing.
