Basic Principle of LUMIX G Image Quality

By adopting the Micro Four Thirds System standard and developing a camera that eliminates the mirror box and optical viewfinder unit, the DMC-G1 revolutionized the world of interchangeable lens system cameras in September 2008 as the world's first mirrorless system camera.
Combining superb image quality, this made it possible to create a new-generation system camera that features Full-time Live View, high-speed, high-precision contrast AF, full HD video recording, and more.
The LUMIX G Micro System is committed to creating a new photographic culture by continuing to introduce innovative, high-performance cameras and lenses for this new-generation standard.

NEW WAY

The World's Fastest Level of Light Speed AF

The world's fastest level of Light Speed AF features approx. 0.09* second which is achieved by reducing the detection time for focusing by doubling the drive speed from 60 fps to 120 fps.

* The time for focusing on the subject is measured with the DMC-GX1 / DMC-GF5 and LUMIX G X VARIO PZ 14-42mm / F3.5-5.6 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S. (H-PS14042) to move the lens position to "2m" from "infinity" position. The zoom position is in wide end. Panasonic measurement method.

Conventional AF system

Light Speed AF

High-precision Contrast AF System

The LUMIX G Micro System cameras adopt the contrast AF that boasts higher accuracy even in shooting at small F value. The phase-difference AF system is susceptible to mechanical margin of error. However, in the contrast AF system, focusing is controlled by the image sensor so that no mechanical margin of error occurs to achieve precise focusing.

Free-angle LCD / LVF (Live View Finder)

The LUMIX G Micro System cameras let you comfortably frame your shots with the LVF (Live View Finder)*1 and flexible free-angle LCD*2. The viewing method can also be selected to match your shooting conditions and composition, which makes them ideal for active shooting.

*1 LVF is equipped with the DMC-GH2 and DMC-G3. For the DMC-GX1, an optional LVF is available.
*2 Free-angle LCD is equipped with the DMC-GH2 and DMC-G3.

Touch-screen Operetion

The touch-screen operation elevates cameras operability even higher. It includes Touch Shutter for shooting, Touch AF for focusing – even when shooting videos – and Touch-scroll Playback for instant image retrieval.

Full-time Live View

Both the LVF (Live View Finder) and the LCD give you a Full-time Live View of what you're shooting with a field of view of approx. 100%. You can confirm the depth of field and shutter speed effects prior to shooting.

NEW QUALITY

Based on the Micro Four Thirds System Standard

The LUMIX G Micro System complies with the Micro Four Thirds System standard. The features that clearly set this standard apart from the Four Thirds System standard include a flange-back distance (mount-to-sensor distance) that is approx. 50% shorter, a lens mount with an outer diameter that is approx. 6mm smaller, and an increase from 9 to 11 electrical contacts in the mount*.
In addition, not only the camera body but also the Micro Four Thirds lenses are smaller, and this is particularly true for the wide-angle and high-power zoom lenses, while maintaining the superior image quality of the 4/3-type image sensor. The increased number of electrical contacts between the lens and the camera body also allow a variety of new features and system functions.

* Image sensor diagonal dimensions are the same for both Four Thirds System and Micro Four Thirds System standards.

Revolutionary Mirrorless Structure

Conventional Mirror Structure

Space is required for the mirror to move, so a proportionate flange-back distance must be provided.

Mirrorless Structure

The mirrorless structure needs no space for the mirror to move, and no penta mirror. This makes it possible to shorten the flange-back distance, making the body more compact.

* This illustration is an artist's conception.

Using the Micro Four Thirds System standard made it possible to create an innovative mirrorless structure in an interchangeable lens system camera. A compact, lightweight body was achieved by eliminating a number of components that are found in a conventional interchangeable lens system camera, including the mirror for the optical viewfinder, the focusing glass, the penta mirror, the distance sensor for phase-differential AF system, and the light sensor for auto exposure.
The distance and light measurements that are conventionally performed by the mirror box are handled by sensors in real time, and highly accurate, high-speed auto focusing is achieved by the use of contrast AF.

LUMIX G / LEICA DG Lenses

The key feature of an interchangeable lens system camera is the ability to change the lens to match each shooting situation. The LUMIX G / LEICA DG lenses, including a 3D compatible lens, were developed in compliance with the Micro Four Thirds System standard for use with the LUMIX G Micro System. Compact and lightweight, these lenses can easily be carried around.

The premium lens brand “X” is newly added to the LUMIX G Micro System. Crystallizing Panasonic's optical technologies, it features superb image rendering for lifelike textures, crisp edge-to-edge contrast, a unique Nano Surface Coating for minimal ghosts and flaring.

The LUMIX G X VARIO PZ 14-42mm / F3.5-5.6 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S. also features the retractable-type zoom lens for superb mobility. The LUMIX G X VARIO PZ 45-175mm / F4.0-5.6 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S. features the Multi-Actuator Floating Inner Focus System.

Conversion Lenses

Wide Conversion LensTele Conversion LensMacro Conversion LensFisheye Conversion Lens

When a 35mm camera lens is used on a digital SLR camera, sharpness and light intensity can be lost and colors can bleed at the frame edges, where light enters at an angle. Wide-angle lenses are especially problematic since oblique light inclined at a large angle tends to enter the peripheral areas. Not with LUMIX G / LEICA DG lenses. Created exclusively for digital use, LUMIX G / LEICA DG lenses are designed so that light can enter only from straight ahead. You get superb rendering, with images that are bright, sharp and vivid all the way to the corners.

Live MOS Sensor / Venus Engine / Dust Reduction System

The 4/3-type Live MOS sensor, with its wide dynamic range and low power consumption, and the Venus Engine imaging processor, with its superb noise reduction performance, are essential to the LUMIX G Micro System camera's exceptional image quality in both photo and video.
Linking smoothly with the Live MOS sensor, the Venus Engine processes a large amount of signals at high speed, making it possible to record full HD video.
And because dust entering the body is a concern with all interchangeable lens system cameras, Panasonic equipped the LUMIX G Micro System with the Supersonic Wave Filter as part of the Dust Reduction System designed to prevent dust and other foreign matter from adhering to the image sensor.
