Many flat-panel TV manufacturers are pushing the wide colour gamut of their display panels by emphasising the area of the gamut, just like saying "The bigger is the better". The concept of the wide colour gamut achieved by Panasonic is distinctively different.

*VIERA emulates the colour of digital cinema projectors currently in theaters.
Panasonic has a clear philosophy for its image quality improvement of TVs and the other AV equipment. Simply put, we strive to "reproduce the filmmaker's intent." This is why we decided to follow Hollywood's digital cinema standards for our wide colour gamut.

Filmmakers are very particular about the colour expression in their movie making processs. The colours play an important role in storytelling, and gives viewers emotional impact. Cinematographers and colourists usually spend at least several weeks to carefully create the colours to best fit each movie.

Panasonic has long been involved in Hollywood and highly respects the work of Hollywood professionals. Since the 1990s, Panasonic has conducted a wide variety of trial-and-error experiments with the cooperation of Hollywood filmmakers. This invaluable connection was one of the prime reasons that we aligned ourselves with Hollywood in the development of VIERA's wide colour gamut. This collaboration continues to guide our efforts in image quality development.

At January's CES, We compared the PZ850U prototype's colour reproduction performance with that of a professional digital cinema projector that contained the one and only DLP technology approved by Hollywood filmmakers. As a result, many professionals from Hollywood were surprised at how close those two images were and congratulated us. Some were even asking for the prototype evaluations to look for the possibilities of the use of the VIERA in their professional environment.

Filmmakers usually have very specific intentions for the images they create. The fact that these intentions could not be accurately relayed to people viewing their movies at home has been a major issue for the movie industry. Panasonic has a 15-year history of collaborating with Hollywood professionals on this difficult problem. Creating truly accurate images has also been one of Panasonic's goals as it continues its shift to HDTV. I am glad that our wide colour gamut approach on VIERA was well accepted by Hollywood filmmakers. I hope you'll feel their original intention through the new VIERA and be able to enjoy the movies even more than before.
