CEATEC JAPAN 2012, Japan's leading IT and electronics trade show, took place the first week of October at Makuhari Messe in Chiba Prefecture. Based on the theme of an "Eco & Smart Lifestyle," the Life & Society Stage at the Panasonic booth presented ecological lifestyles made possible by networking technology, and showed just how simple, convenient, safe and secure, pleasant and comfortable they are. The booth displayed a variety of Panasonic's smart offerings, ranging from Smart VIERA and other audiovisual equipment to smart appliances and energy solutions.

The Smart AV corner was set up right next to the Smart Appliances and Smart Energy blocks. This corner introduced the latest digital AV products featuring enhanced networking functions like "OHEYA Jump Link (DLNA)." Panasonic presented new VIERA products that are even easier to use because of their connectivity with smartphones and other AV equipment.

The booth was literally filled with visitors throughout the event.

The Smart AV corner presented a variety of benefits provided by enhanced networking functions, such as viewing still images stored in LUMIX or ELUGA on the large VIERA screen and transferring TV programs recorded by a Blu-ray Disc recorder to a portable TV in a different room.

VIERA Connect services in Japan were launched a year ago. The demonstration corner introduced new VIERA Connect Apps for optimizing sports programs and video services.
The smartphone connectivity corner presented a host of applications, including VIERA remote App, which lets the user easily Swipe & Share still images and other content stored in a smartphone to a VIERA TV, and an app that links smartphones to a Blu-ray Disc recorder. This corner also exhibited technologies that let the user search for TV programs and set timer-recordings from outside the house using a smartphone. This is particularly well suited to Japan where many people record TV programs while they are away from home.
Panasonic released a number of smart home appliances to the Japanese market this summer. These products link to each other and connect to cloud-based services to offer new value to consumers. Currently available smart appliances include refrigerators, washing machines, microwave ovens and rice cookers, as well as three healthcare products (a body composition balance meter, an activity monitor and a blood pressure monitor). At CEATEC, Panasonic's Corporate Stage introduced the benefits of a lifestyle aided by smart appliances.
The Smart AV presentation showed VIERA remote App at work in everyday settings.

An area with a living room and a kitchen was set up on the second floor of the Panasonic booth. The guided tour gave visitors firsthand experience of the eco-friendly and smart lifestyles made possible by connecting various home appliances.

A skit showed a family viewing vacation photos taken with a smartphone on a large VIERA screen.

Large-screen VIERA benefits were presented in "near-future situations," like displaying recipes downloaded from a cloud-based service and monitoring healthcare data such as body weight and calorie consumption.
As with IFA 2012, Panasonic also exhibited prototypes of the most advanced high-resolution displays for business applications. The 20" 4K2K LCDs and a 145" 8K plasma display were exhibited in a darkened booth.
Four LCD display panels measuring 3.5 mm in thickness were arranged two by two, and buttons marked with the flags of Japan, France, the U.S. and Brazil were set up in front of them. When a button was pressed, images from the corresponding country were shown on the LCD screens.

Next to the above-described demonstration, 20" 4K2K LCDs displayed the same delicate high-resolution flower images that impressed visitors at IFA 2012.

Ultra-high-resolution images of nighttime and other scenes filling the 145" 8K plasma display impressed visitors with their extraordinary realism and depth.

This demonstration corner showed an interactive plasma display that is widely used and highly acclaimed in educational applications. The corner also gave viewers firsthand experience of the natural, high-speed image rendering of the Electronic Pen.
On display here were new technologies for controlling home appliances, such as refrigerators and air conditioners, from a smartphone, as well as new products incorporating the Smart Home Energy Management System (SMARTHEMS) for controlling the power consumption of home appliances.
The amount of power consumed by home appliances can be displayed and monitored not only on a dedicated monitor but also on a PC, smartphone, tablet or large-screen VIERA via VIERA Connect.

Panasonic continues to forge ahead with VIERA-centered Smart AV to propose smarter lifestyles for all. Please look forward to a steady stream of new technologies and products.
