an excerpt from "The Spirit of Service"

Young apprentices of my generation were often taught by our elders that a merchant who hopes to prosper in the long run must at times endure losses over the short. The same message, however, seen in the way of the old school, told us that if a merchant does not learn the real value of loss then he will never make any gain. And in my opinion this principle applies not only to business, but holds true for every aspect of one's life. However in today's world, we would express it in different terms such as,"Service First and Foremost", conveying the simple message that only once we give may we reap the rewards in the end.
