FAQ

KX-P8420

1. Software

Q:

The printout has a visible halftone pattern (round dot or rosette pattern as you can see at the offset printing) and looks very harsh. How can I solved?

A:

Possible Cause: The application screen settings are used instead of KX-P8420 resident screen pattern.

Corrective Action: Use the KX-P8420 resident screen pattern. Some application has an option like "Use Printer's default screen" that let KX-P8420 decide which screen, Printer resident screen or the application screen should be used. Enable this option to activate the printer default screen. This setting can be found in the Print dialog or the dialog evoked from Print dialog or other dialog for setting document information. If you cannot find, please refer to the manual for application.

  • For Illustrator, Enable Use Printer's default Screens in File/Document menu.
  • For Photoshop, Click "Setup" button from "Print" dialog. Then click "Screens" button.
  • Then enable "Use Printer's default Screens".
  • For Acrobat, enable "Use Printer's default Screens".
Q:

There are a lot of items of Graphics tab on Printer Property. Please explain us meaning of each items of Graphics tab on Printer Property.

A:

As you know, the printer driver of the KX-P8420 uses Adobe PostScript which is a versatile operating system.

Adobe PS driver is adopted by various devices from low-end to high-end. And same user interface are using in every PS drivers. Therefore, some high-end model's function is shown in low-end model's drivers, even if it is not supported. Needles to say, it is not only for the KX-P8420, but also for other models.

In case of KX-P8420, following function is not available;

  • "Resolution" is fixed at "1,200 x 1,200dpi" in printer driver. But it is not available.
  • "Halftoning" is showing at "Use setting below". But it is available only "Use Printer's setting".
  • "Special" is not available depends on application software.
  • "Scaling" is also not available depends on application software.

These are not the KX-P8420's software bugs. The detail of non-available printer driver's function of KX-P8420, please refer to "Read Me file (Readme.doc)" which was provided from Adobe in KX-P8420 CD-ROM.

Q:

I see the resolution is shown as 1200dpi in the Graphic tab of Windows95 driver or in the Print dialog of some application, but the setting cannot be changed.

A:

KX-P8420 default printing resolution is 600x600 dpi, even though 1200dpi is shown. The resolution setting can be changed by Printer driver properties. For Windows95 driver, select "Device options" tab to change the setting.

Q:

In the "Font" tab setting items of the "Printer Property", there is setting function that allows to use always PostScript instead of TrueType. Is there any possibility of an occurring something error?

A:

If sets always use PostScript, there is possibility of wrong characters printing. Therefore we recommend that Font setting refer to system, not printer driver. Due to that, system can sort out fonts.

Q:

Windows spooler show Printer error and jobs cannot be printed when printing from Windows NT4.0 using lpr port.

A:

Corrective Action:

  1. Open KX-P8420 Printer Properties. Select Scheduling tab. Enable "Spool print document so program finishes printing faster". And then enable "Start printing after last page is spooled".
  2. Install NT driver again by double clicking "Add Printer".
  3. When this does not work, try to change IP address of the printer if another IP address is available and set printer port setting again.
Q:

I feel sometimes the operation of KX-P8420 WebTools is slow and takes long time until screen appears. Is there any way to make it faster?

A:

KX-P8420 WebTools utilize Java software that is downloaded from inside KX-P8420. This Java software enables the user-friendly operation and the appealing appearance, but requires more PC resources than showing normal home pages. So it is recommended to use faster network interfaces.

Q:

How should I monitor of the status of KX-P8420 remotely?

A:

You can monitor the status by using KX-P8420 "Status" tool. You can launch this tool by clicking "Status" button when KX-P8420 WebTools main screen appears. Q:

How can I use KX-P8420 WebDownloader?

A:

KX-P8420 WebDownloader is a tool which sends PS files over the network. By specifying PS files by clicking "Browse..." button and click "Send file" button, you can send PS files to the printer to print. Although the help screen of WebDownloader says that PCL files can be downloaded, downloading PCL files to KX-P8420 is not effective.

Please use PS files to download to the printer. Most applications has a "Print to file" option in the Print dialog. Enable this option to create PS file. Once you create PS file, you do not have to open an application to print a document every time you need to print.

The WebDownloader has a button named "Font", but this button is not currently available with KX-P8420. So please do not use it.

Q:

I understand that KX-P8420 WebSpooler has a function that can manipulate the jobs already printed. But I wonder how many printed jobs can be saved on the printer HDD.

A:

KX-P8420 can store the printed jobs on the HDD if HDD and 32MB or more RAM is installed and these jobs can be manipulated by using WebSpooler. At default, the number of the printed jobs saved on HDD is limited to 10, but can be configured from 1 to 99 by using WebSetup. Please note that the number of jobs is limited to the remaining HDD capacity and may not store the jobs as much. Otherwise the printed jobs can be stored until the number of jobs reaches the specified value. After that, the oldest job is discarded to allow the newly printed job.
