Motivation for Installation

In order to select the systems and equipment for use in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) of a hospital, it is necessary to hypothesise the actual flow and ease of use for coping with each medical case, and to conduct an ample number of simulations. So in 2011, Paramount Bed Co., Ltd. established the “Medical Design Studio” in Hongo, Tokyo, as a simulation space that meets the needs of various medical sites. The company considered the feasibility of studio utilisation, including use for remote hospitals, but a number of hurdles had to be passed. Because the systems and equipment for critical care, such as those in the ICU, are large in scale and highly complicated, they are difficult to move around. It is also difficult to adjust the schedules of the people who need to be involved in sales talks (doctors, nurses, technicians, etc.). And it is extremely hard to arrange for lecturers to handle training seminars. Under these circumstances, the application of an effective studio that doesn't include a travelling burden or other restrictions and enables authorised personnel to be involved from the reviewing stage was an urgent task.

Paramount Bed Co., Ltd. is a major Japanese medical and nursing-care product manufacturer. In addition to the Tokyo Head Office, the company maintains nine branch offices and two factories within Japan. In November 2011, the Medical Design Studio was established in Hongo, Tokyo, for strategic showroom applications. It serves as a place for proposing solutions for the equipment, systems, and information terminals of an acute setting centred on the ICU. Based on the "Local Showroom" concept instead of a conventional showroom, the HD Visual Communications System is actively used as a tool to eliminate the distance between the showroom and the sales discussion site.

System Selection Points

In the beginning, medical systems (surgery video transmission) designed by other companies were considered, but the costs were extremely high, which led to some uncertainty. Also, with other systems, the resolution was low and the connection was unstable, leading to the decision not to use them. During this time, the company first saw the HD Visual Communications System at the Asia Medical Show venue that was held in Kyushu. The price was affordable, the system was simple and easy to use, and the actual video footage was as clear as that of a Full-HD TV, so the decision was made to use it. The availability of NAT Transversal Service, a flexible connection service, was also keys to the final decision.

Installation Effect

By connecting business discussion sites such as hospitals and showrooms with the HD Visual Communications System, it has become possible to demonstrate the equipment installed in the Medical Design Studio in distant locations. By enabling a salesperson in a hospital to describe the showroom equipment on site, it has also become possible to offer explanations to medical specialists who cannot leave their hospitals. The "Local Showroom" concept has truly increased business efficiency. The HD Visual Communications System was also connected to a booth at HOSPEX, a medical equipment industry exhibition. There were minimal audio delays and the image was crisp and clear. Plans are under way to use the system in a similar way at academic conferences on intensive care in the future.
