In 1952, Sanyo Electric released its brand new plastic radio,
the SS-52. Priced lower than any other radio on the market and featuring a truly
innovative design, this radio provided SANYO with a successful start in the Japanese
electrical appliance industry.
In the summer of the same year, Toshio met the president of a retailer in Osaka
who suggested that SANYO start producing washing machines. "My wife has been
using a washing machine for a long time now and she says it's amazing. I think
it would be a great product for SANYO." Interested, Toshio asked if he could
take a look at the machine. Featuring a round washing tub that cleaned clothes
through the movement and agitation of water, Toshio could easily see how this
would be a great convenience to homemakers. At the time, however, these machines
were far too expensive for the average household. Toshio knew that if he could
design and market an affordable washing machine, homemakers throughout Japan would
want one. |
