1.Software

Symptom

1-1 KX-P8420 specific features are not available in Adobe PageMaker print dialog.

Possible Cause

PPD (PostScript printer description) file is not copied to the specified folder or KX-P8420 PPD file is not specified in PageMaker print dialog.

Solution

1) Copy PPD file named Pakx2010.ppd located under Windows system folder to the following folders.
For PageMaker6.5, Adobe\PageMaker65\RSRC\UKENGLISH\PPD4
For PageMaker6, Adobe\PM6\RSRC\UKENGLISH\PPD4
2) Select Print Menu of PageMaker.
3) Select "Panasonic KX-P8420" as PPD.
4) Click "Paper" button or "Features" button to enable KX-P8420 specific features.
For more detail, please refer to the PageMaker's manual.

Symptom

1-2 KX-P8420 always print PS error page when printing from Adobe Photoshop.

Possible Cause

The print dialog of Adobe Photoshop has the setting by which user can select data type. (ASCII,Binary,JPEG). Selecting Binary as a data type always produce PS error print and should be avoided.

Solution

Select ASCII or JPEG. Selecting JPEG produces better performance and is recommended.

Symptom

1-3 KX-P8420 cannot print correctly from QuarkXpress ver3.3x.

Solution

Select "Fiery" in "Use PDF for option" in PrinterSetup menu.

Symptom

1-4 The printout has a visible halftone pattern (round dot or rosette pattern as you can see at the offset printing) and looks very harsh.

Possible Cause

The application screen settings are used instead of KX-P8420 resident screen pattern.

Solution

Use the KX-P8420 resident screen pattern. Some application has a option like "Use Printer's default screen" that let KX-P8420 decide which screen, Printer resident screen or the application screen should be used.
Enable this option to activate the printer default screen. This setting can be found in the Print dialog or the dialog evoked from Print dialog or other dialog for setting document information. If you cannot find, please refer to the manual for application.

For Illustrator, Enable "Use Printer's default Screens" in "File"/"Document" menu.
For Photoshop, Click "Setup" button from "Print" dialog. Then click "Screens" button.
Then enable "Use Printer's default Screens".
For Acrobat, enable "Use Printer's default Screens".

*KX-P8420 needs a halftoning process to print a color image. In the process of halftoning, colors and shading are approximated by a pattern of pixels capable of only a limited number of discrete colors. A good example is a newspaper photograph that renders gray tones with only black-and-white pixels.

Symptom

1-5 When printing the Microsoft Office files including imported graphic or images, the color output become much different from the screen. (become bluish).

Solution

Please remove KX-P8420 ICM profile (Pakx2010.icm) if it is installed in the Windows\System\Color folder. If the ICM profile is installed, JPEG, BMP,and TIFF images may not be printed correctly from Microsoft Office 97. The same problem also happens when you create pdf file using Adobe distiller after making ps file using P8420 driver.

Symptom

1-6 You are using the word processor software for Windows 3.1 such as Write or MS Word and Paper source options are shown as "Tray1,Tray2,..." instead of KX-P8420 original tray options such as "Auto(Paper), MPT transparency..." when you open the print dialog or the application paper setup dialog.

Solution

For selecting paper sources for these applications, use KX-P8420 printer properties launched from the print dialog.

Symptom

1-7 KX-P8420 cannot print correctly from WordPerfect for Windows 95 if the file includes graphic pattern.

Solution

1) Launch Notepad and open KX-P8420 PPD file (\Windows\system\Pakx2010.ppd).

Symptom

2-28 Image quality of transparency is not good when it is projected on to the screen. Especially yellow color does not look good and become grayish.

Possible Cause

You are using the type of transparency that is not suited for printing with KX-P8420.

Solution

If you want to have the better quality, please use CG3710.
1) First of all, please make sure if you are using recommended transparency like CG3700, CG3710. Other transparency might be resulted in damaging fuser.
2) Please make sure if you have changed the paper source setting to transparency in the driver properties. Please note that fuser temperature setting is different on each media type. So you need to change the setting whenever you want to print on different media.
3) Please make sure if you are using the correct side of the transparency. Although it says both side can be used as the specification of transparency, there is a difference in terms of print quality between the front side and the back side. Please do not use the back side.
4) Printing CG3710 may cause it being wrapped around the roller inside the fuser unit in case the transparency is set the other way around.
Please note that:
When you print transparency from Multi Purpose Tray, please set with its label side down (There should be some label attached on a side of sheet.) and specify MPT transparency as Paper source in KX-P8420 Printer driver Properties
When you print transparency from Transparency cassette, please set with its label side up and specify Auto(Transparency) in KX-P8420 Printer driver Properties.

Symptom

2-29  Darker area of a print out has a poor color. (brownish and has no detail)

Possible Cause

You may have chosen "Three color mode" or CMY mode in the setting of KX-P8420 Printer Properties. Because black color is substituted with the combination of 3 color(C,M,Y) in "Three color mode", the darker area is not printed clearly and tend to become brownish and lose the detail.
Select this option only when you want to produce draft copies of color documents quickly and you do not care much about print quality. Otherwise select CMYK mode or Colorwise Business color (Windows 95 driver only).

Symptom

3-1 Windows spooler show Printer error and jobs cannot be printed
when printing from Windows NT4.0 using lpr port.

Solution

1) Open KX-P8420 Printer Properties. Select "Scheduling" tab. Enable "Spool print document so program finishes printing faster". And then enable "Start printing after last page is spooled."
2) If it does not work, install NT driver again by double clicking Add Printer.

small white spots

Symptom

6-3 Not enough toner is attached on transparency.

Possible Cause

You are using the type of transparency that is not suited for printing with KX-P8420.

Solution

Please use 3M CG3700 or CG3710.
