Case Studies - Construction Industry / Ishimoto Architectural & Engineering Firm, Inc.

Motivation for Installation

Construction and planning require a high level of understanding of detailed parts and close cooperation between specialised staff members from various fields, including design, construction, mechanical equipment and electrical equipment. In architecture and design, internal checking systems for structural designs have been strengthened in recent years. Ishimoto Architectural & Engineering Firm, Inc. is no exception, as their structural designs are all self-produced to ensure quality control. At the Structural Design Department based in Tokyo, the number of business trips required to branch offices in order to hold meetings increased in recent years, which led to a number of challenges, such as reducing the burden and increasing business efficiency for the architects. To solve meet these challenges, the Planning Affairs Department installed another brand's web conferencing system. It never spread through the company, though, because people complained that it was difficult to set up and operate, it was a bother to manage the license account, and it didn't have sufficient picture quality to let them talk while displaying materials on the screen. As a result, it didn't really solve their problems.

Ishimoto Architectural & Engineering Firm, Inc. was founded in 1927. Its Head Office in Tokyo. It is a major architectural office that boasts over 80 years of history and strong customer confidence. With more than 300 specialised professionals in the architectural design field, Ishimoto has been involved in the construction of many well-known facilities, and handles a wide range of projects — including public facilities, hospitals, commercial facilities, and urban development. In addition to the Tokyo Head Office and eight branch offices throughout Japan, the company also has bases in the United States and Italy.

System Selection Points

The Planning Affairs Department then did a comparison of the video conference systems available on the market and narrowed their choices down. Finally, they watched an actual demonstration and chose the HD Visual Communications System. Panasonic offers a wide range of products, including plasma displays and cameras, and one of the deciding factors was that it was able to handle all of these areas together, including maintenance. The fact that Panasonic's remote control and GUI are similar to those used in VIERA TVs so they are easy to operate was also a big plus. Product applications include sharing construction blueprints displayed on a computer, holding meetings while pointing out corresponding parts of blueprints using a main camera, and holding meetings while displaying models for design review. Because these things can be confirmed with the same ease as talking together face-to-face while looking at actual objects, users say their conversations feel natural and comfortable.

Installation Effect

Business trips to the branch offices, which had posed a challenge, were reduced from 2-3 times per month to once a month. With business trips, the number of staff members that could attend the meetings was limited, but with the HD Visual Communications System, more people are able to attend the meetings, which significantly increases the number of participants. By transitioning from conventional web conferences between individuals to meetings where many people can attend together, the level of shared understanding has improved, significantly raising business efficiency. Since installing the system, the number of technical seminars has also increased, and since many architects using the system are able to point out things on actual blueprints with the same ease as if they were talking in the same room, a lot of people mention that they feel like they're truly sharing the same space. In the future, the company plans to use the HD Visual Communications System for business with its overseas branch offices as well.
