Case Studies - Manufacturing / Worldwide Corporation

Motivation for Installation

With its main plant located in Shanghai, China, Worldwide Corporation mounts printed circuit boards and produces electronic components, moulded plastic parts, and metallic pressed parts. Some parts and materials are shipped to Shanghai from Kusatsu, Shiga Prefecture, in Japan, and constant communication flows between the Shanghai Plant and the Osaka Support Team, for procuring materials and adjusting deadlines, and the distribution centre in Kobe, for shipping and customs operations. The number of trips from Japan required for these business activities continued to increase, and the costs continued to rise. To achieve better overseas communication, the company installed a videoconference system (a non-Panasonic system) and used it to communicate with the Shanghai Plant. However, the image quality and sound quality were poor, and the connection was frequently interrupted. There were also other problems, such as the fact that the communication line was metered and the cost per hour was quite high, so the system could not be used for long time periods. As such, it didn't provide the company with the basic communication that it needed. Also, when a product defect occurred, the problem product had to be shipped from the Shanghai Plant for inspection in Japan, which was both time consuming and costly.

Worldwide Corporation manufactures and markets electronic components and precision parts, such as capacitors. It established a base in China at an early stage, and expanded its operations to a global scale. The Shanghai Plant serves as its main plant, with an integrated shipping system that covers everything from production and procurement to export. This allows the company to provide high-quality products worldwide at low cost.

System Selection Points

The image quality of the previous, non-Panasonic videoconference system was so bad that it wasn't possible to determine who was talking at the other site. With the HD Visual Communications System, you can talk naturally while looking at the other person's face. Seeing an actual demo of this quality by connecting to another site in Tokyo was the main factor in our decision to choose this system. Also, the other system made it hard to express ourselves clearly because there was a delay in the sound, but the HD Visual Communications System has high sound quality with very little delay, so even tiny nuances are easy to pick up. The connection interruption problem was also resolved by the stable connection of the new system, resulting in more comfortable communication. It no longer feels like Shanghai is so far away. Now, it feels like the other party is in the room next door.

Installation Effect

The HD Visual Communications System is active in a variety of fields, from executive administration to sales, technology, production control and distribution. The frequency and time spent for overseas connection are rapidly growing. As a result of the HD Visual Communications System being used more often in everyday communication, the number of overseas trips has been minimised. System users made the following comments: "When we're working with the people in Shanghai, it feels like they're right next door," and "There's a big difference in communication between talking to someone while actually looking at them and simply sending an e-mail message." The cost of shipping sample products, which previously ranged from one to two million yen per year during busy periods, has also been greatly reduced. And when a defect occurs in the production process, the problem part can be enlarged by the handheld camcorder and displayed over the HD Visual Communications System. This allows the Head Office in Osaka to immediately check the part.
