Creating a Space That Brings People Together Shining Light on India’s New Landmark

Located on the banks of the Ganges River in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi is one of the oldest cities in the world with around 3,000 years of history. Despite being the center of the country’s culture and history, and being regarded as a sacred place for Hinduism and Jainism, there had been no facilities to support and promote the city’s culture and historical significance. In May 2021, the Varanasi International Cooperation and Convention Centre called “Rudraksha” was opened as a center for cultural exchange and social interaction in the city.

Rudraksha was developed by the Indian government as a base for promoting cultural and artistic activities and as a gathering place. The Japanese government has supported this project with financial aid as a symbol of friendship between Japan and India. Rudraksha is expected to contribute to the ongoing development of the city of Varanasi as a venue for international conferences and large-scale events for cultural exchange.

Rudraksha features Panasonic’s indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures, with solar panels on the roof and KNX*1 systems for lighting control. Panasonic helps create comfortable spaces for people to gather by providing solutions that satisfy the needs for aesthetic quality and sustainability.

1. Design Conscious and Energy Saving Lighting Solutions

Outdoor Lighting

Panasonic lighting fixtures illuminate the 108 decorative elements on the distinctive façade and beautifully light up the building’s exterior to create a stunning view, even when seen from a distance. LED lighting consumes significantly less power than conventional lighting and helps improve energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions from the building.

Indoor Lighting

In the main hall which functions as a theater as well as a lecture hall, adjustable lighting offers flexibility to create the perfect ambiance to suit the purpose and nature of each event. It creates an evenly lit space for the comfort of both the people in the audience and the performers.

2. Remote Control for Lighting in Large Facilities
Smart Building Solutions for Easier Facility Management

Energy efficiency in buildings is necessary to reduce carbon footprints. Panasonic provided a KNX lighting control system for Rudraksha’s facility control room. This system enables easy and efficient control for the facility’s lighting through a 10-inch touchscreen panel. The scene settings significantly reduce the building’s energy consumption and carbon emissions.

3. Clean Energy Solutions Contribute to Energy Independence and Decarbonization

Panasonic delivered 109kW high-efficiency solar panels for the signature circular roof, which is the main feature of the design of Rudraksha. The panels provide the maximum power generation capacity in a limited area. In the event of a power outage, the panels can supply power to the facility’s diesel generator to protect the safety and comfort of the people in the building. Our solar panels ensure high quality and durability that are not affected by weather conditions or seasons, contributing to stable operation over the long term.
