Cutting-edge lighting and imaging fixture create new drama at the “Sanctuary” of Japanese rugby

Built in 1929 and boasting a spectator capacity of 12,000, Hanazono Rugby Stadium was Asia’s best stadium dedicated to rugby. In the 90 years since its completion, the stadium has been beloved as the “Sanctuary” of Japanese rugby. Newly constructed in 1992 with a spectator capacity of 26,544, Ground No. 1 underwent extensive renovation and expansion work that was completed in 2018, and Hanazono Rugby Stadium was reborn as a stadium capable of hosting international matches, beginning with the Japan Rugby Top League.
The lighting facilities that have been installed are LED floodlights that are also highly compatible with television broadcasts. Altogether, there are 381 LED floodlights installed on light towers and stadium beams along the top of the main stand. Lighting simulations were carried out numerous times to prevent not only light leaking outside the stadium but also unnecessary glare on the players during the game, and illumination levels required for international tournaments (2,000 lx and higher) have been secured. Installing LED floodlights has resulted in large power savings while achieving a comfortable sports environment with even brightness.
Furthermore, the large 710-inch outdoor LED video display installed in the North Stand shows not only the name of the opposition team, names of players, scores, and other game information but also images of spectators captured by swivel cameras installed in four locations around the stadium as well as media player-generated materials. This creates an environment where spectators can experience dramatic sporting events befitting the "sacred ground" of rugby.
