“A New Beacon of Faith: Illuminating the Symbolism of Baitul Khairaat Mosque”

The Baitul Khairaat Mosque is a 4-hectare complex accommodating up to 15,000 worshippers, developed as a new religious and civic landmark in Palu, Central Sulawesi.
Designed to support worship, community activities, and social gatherings, the mosque places a strong emphasis on lighting as a key element in shaping its architectural expression, spiritual atmosphere, and nighttime identity.
The name Baitul Khairaat, derived from the Qur’an, refers to a house that serves as a center for worship, da’wah (religious outreach), and communal life. This meaning is reflected in the mosque’s architectural composition, where lighting is used to articulate symbolic elements and reinforce their significance after dark.

One of the most prominent features is the mosque’s tower, home to Indonesia’s largest analog clock, which measures 19.3 meters in diameter. The tower is illuminated with Panasonic RGBW floodlights, ensuring high visibility and establishing the mosque as a recognizable landmark in the city.

Lighting continues to play a defining role across the mosque complex.
The main lobby, which symbolizes unity among worshippers, is illuminated with a combination of adjustable and recessed downlights to deliver uniform illuminance and visual comfort.
This approach supports the circulation of large congregations while maintaining a calm, dignified atmosphere befitting a sacred space.

At the heart of the mosque, the dome serves as the central place of worship and the primary visual focus. Floodlighting accentuates its form and spiritual symbolism, creating a warm, serene ambience within the prayer hall. In accordance with Islamic tradition—in which a new day begins at sunset—the top of the dome is further illuminated with Panasonic RGBW floodlights. This lighting composition signals the transition at Maghrib, reinforcing the dome’s role as both a spiritual and temporal reference point.

The mosque’s twin towers—each rising to 66.66 meters in reference to the Qur’an’s 6,666 verses—are illuminated with a combination of RGBW floodlights. In concert with the main building’s 30-meter height, which symbolizes the Qur’an’s 30 juz’, the lighting is carefully applied to translate this numerical symbolism into a clear, legible nighttime expression without overpowering the architectural form.

Beyond the primary worship areas, the lighting design also addresses safety, wayfinding, and functional needs throughout the mosque complex.

Aesthetic considerations are integrated through strategic fixture placement and careful color tuning.
Panasonic RGBW floodlights play a key role in highlighting architectural details while maintaining visual harmony and a welcoming atmosphere for the congregation.

Lighting fixtures serve not only to provide illumination but also as visual cues for safety and wayfinding. Panasonic LED step lights are integrated into the stairways to clearly define each step, guiding worshippers with calm, reassuring light while reinforcing a sense of order and continuity throughout circulation areas.

In areas dedicated to ritual purification, lighting supports visual clarity and hygiene without causing distraction. Panasonic in-ground luminaires provide gentle, well-directed illumination, ensuring visibility and comfort during wudu (ablution) and allowing the space to maintain functionality while preserving its quiet, respectful character.

Given the mosque’s scale and capacity, exterior lighting is given equal priority. The surrounding grounds and parking areas are illuminated with streetlights to ensure safe access and orderly circulation for worshippers attending daily prayers, Friday prayers (Jumu’ah), and major religious events. With a comprehensive lighting strategy applied across worship spaces, circulation areas, and exterior zones, the mosque achieves a cohesive, respectful nighttime environment.

With detailed lighting calculations, careful fixture selection, and system implementation by Panasonic, Baitul Khairaat Mosque demonstrates how lighting supports sacred architecture while also addressing functional requirements related to scale, safety, and durability. The project reflects Panasonic’s approach to lighting religious landmarks, in which technology serves meaning, reinforces architectural identity, and contributes to the creation of a dignified, enduring symbol for Palu.
