Starwood Hotels and Resorts Group, the operating company behind The Westin Beijing Financial Street that is leading the hotel chain industry in terms of active efforts to contribute to the environment. At The Westin Beijing Financial Street, we have had to devise specific energy-saving measures to meet our electricity consumption target of 30% reduction. We implemented ways of improving both customer satisfaction and our brand image by actually saving energy in guest rooms.
Developing specific energy-saving measures is impossible without precisely identifying how electricity is actually being used in guest rooms. We therefore began by investigating the electricity consumption in individual guest rooms, a task that was difficult to ascertain in the past. Eco-POWER METERs were installed in the rooms to measure guests’ electricity consumption from check-in to check-out. By examining guests’ electricity usage, we found that tourists tend to use more electricity when staying at a hotel than at home. The investigation results helped us determine standard values for guest room electricity consumption.
Promotion of energy saving in the guest rooms must not be achieved at the expense of customer satisfaction. With the hotel, we devised a service to bring greater benefits to customers who cooperated with our energy-saving initiatives. 47 guest rooms, which were fitted with Eco-POWER METERs, were labeled Green Rooms whose electricity consumption was measured during guest stays. Guests who consumed less energy than our established standard values were given reward points that could be exchanged for free stays or room upgrades at Starwood Hotels and Resorts Group locations. This scheme was clearly effective during an initial trial period and has been introduced officially.
A representative of The Westin Beijing Financial Street told us: “If the lighting in the Green Rooms were automatically switched to the energy-saving mode, even more electricity could be saved. But there are light switches all over the rooms, and adjusting all of them is a hassle. Can we control the entire room’s lighting by a tablet?” In our newly-developed Green Room System, tablets installed in each guest room allow users to operate things like lighting and air conditioning as well as displaying the overall electricity consumption in real time. Lighting usage can also be monitored and controlled remotely.
The Green Room System is being tested in ten guest rooms. These tests have already shown great energy-saving potential. A representative of The Westin Beijing Financial Street says, “Customers really like the fact that electricity consumption can be seen in real time with a video game-like experience. Next, we are planning a service that uses the data recorded in the Green Room System to analyze customer room temperature preferences and light usage patterns to recreate the same environment on their next visit. We also plan to develop an interface that our housekeeping staff can use more easily.”
The Sandals Resorts Group is based in Jamaica where it operates resort hotels. Here, photovoltaic power generation systems have been installed on the roofs of cottage-type guest rooms to work in conjunction with the Green Room Systems. Energy is saved by combining photovoltaic energy generation with remote surveillance and central control of electrical equipment. Panasonic is expanding its optimized energy solutions to suit the needs of different locations across the world.

Compact, simple wattmeter able to measure, in real time, the power consumption of each piece of equipment and appliance and to record the reductions achieved in power consumption. An extensive line-up is available. For example, the meter can measure not only a single circuit—each piece of equipment and appliance and each office—but also multiple circuits. Furthermore, depending on the meter type, it is possible to enter values such as water consumption, temperature, and air-flow measured with sensors. Downloading 'visualization' software allows you to display measurement values in graphs by month, day, and time. The Eco-POWER METER supports energy-saving efforts in a wide variety of facilities including offices, hospitals, factories, restaurants, and schools.
