Palm oil, extracted from oil palms, is very popular as a versatile oil derived from plants and the most widely produced plant oil in the world.
We are exposed to products using palm oil on a daily basis.

Palm oil is used to fry bread, doughnuts, and instant noodles, and as an ingredient to smooth the texture of chocolate and ice cream.
Palm oil is used not only in foods but also in various daily necessities, such as detergents and shampoos.
It is said that about half of the products sold in supermarkets contain palm oil.

Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS)
After harvesting period of more than 25 years, most of the felled trunks are left in the plantation as they are where they decay and decompose.
This causes them to emit greenhouse gases, including methane gas and CO2 (carbon dioxide), placing a heavy burden on the environment.*
Methane gas is said to have a greenhouse effect 25 times greater than CO2.
To slow global warming, someone has to curb those emissions.

Panasonic has developed the world's first technology
that enables the production of upcycled board
from oil palm waste via an intermediate material,
which can be used for furniture and building materials.
In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions,
this technology to make a
"new material that can replace wood" is expected
to have multiple positive effects,
including halting the destruction of forests,
which are a source of CO2 absorption,
and creating new jobs in the
palm oil-producing countries.

- SATREPS is a three to five-year research program conducted jointly
by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST),
the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED),
and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA),
in which researchers from developing countries conduct joint research.
- * Surveyed by Panasonic as of March 2022
- * Converted to intermediate material under the technical cooperation of
JIRCAS and IHI, which are SATREPS participating members

Just like recycling plastic bottles,
our small choices will lead to the creation of a
completely new oil palm cycle and the creation of a
sustainable future for the planet.
