Glossary of EXAMINATIONS AND TESTS

S-14-1-1/8 : University entrance examinations

After 1947, the Japanese educational system underwent many changes. At the present time, university entrance examinations are set individually by each university rather than by a central body. The examination set by the University is standard for all students wishing to enter, regardless of which faculty they wish to join. The basic subjects are mathematics, Japanese literature and English language. Very large numbers of students, far more than the places available, sit the examinations set by the prestigious national and private universities. In 1970, nearly 25% of all young people of university entrance age went on to enter university, over 25% of this number being female students.
